Welcome to the TG DevBlog!

Congratulations! You have stumbled upon - or been thrust onto - the ThroughLine Games Developer Blog. Here, we will regularly update you on the development process of Forgotton Anne. Bear with us if you’ve already heard about the game as this introductory post will assume you have not.

Forgotton Anne is a seamless cinematic adventure game featuring hand-drawn aesthetics and animations. It takes place in the Forgotten Lands, a place populated by creatures called forgotlings; objects mislaid from the human world. An old man named Bonku, and Anne, a young strong-willed girl, must find a way to get back home while finding themselves amidst a rebellion against their presence.

Forgotton Anne is a story-driven experience that puts you in Anne’s shoes, featuring light puzzle-platforming and dialogue choices that make her journey yours.

The game is being developed in Unity, but with a lot of custom tools developed to help bring all the different pieces together. Development started in 2014 and we are finally close to reaching the end. From the get-go, the project was gargantuan in ambition considering the team size, from thousands of hand-drawn frames of animation to recording hundreds of pages of dialogue and a symphonic score that accompanies the experience.

Into this mesh of aesthetics comes the challenge of designing puzzles that feel like they belong in this world, the blending of traditional adventure game exploration elements and platforming controls, and the need to contextualize the whole thing in a narrative setting that entices and hooks the player. We would like to invite you behind the scenes of our development of the game and show you the challenges we’ve had to tackle in the process of creating Forgotton Anne.

Stay tuned for more detailed blog posts from team members in the coming weeks. If you have questions or topics you’d like to see discussed in future blog posts, please tell us in the comments section.

Thank you for reading and see you next time! :D
